Drake, Kirko Bangz & Bryson Tiller Fans Debate Who Created Trap Soul

Drake, Kirko Bangz and Bryson Tiller‘s respective fan bases all have their opinions on who created the Trap Soul genre – and they’re battling it out on Twitter over it.

The debate began on Wednesday (April 26), when an R&B enthusiast at the handle @RnBTomi tweeted their hot take on the topic – that Kirko Bangz was the originator. They included Kirko’s 2011 hit single “Drank in My Cup” to back up their claim, leading many to jump into the post’s comments with their own opinions.

When someone countered saying: “Ehhhh…Drake?,” Tomi had a response: “I think Drake was one of the first to make popularize melodic rap in 2009 with So Far Gone, but I think Kirko solidified the trapsoul sound in 2010/11.”

When someone else suggested Bryson Tiller, Tomi said: “This song came out years before bryson tiller’s ‘trapsoul’. I think Bryson just perfected and coined the term.”

Check out what others had to say on the topic below:

While Drake did come out first as far as the three of them go, arriving on the mainstream scene with his 2009 breakout project So Far Gone, Kirko followed shortly after in 2011 with “Drank in My Cup.” Bryson Tiller debuted his T R A P S O U L album in 2015, but is certainly the most associated with the word because of the project’s title.

Kirko has remained relatively under the radar in recent years, while Bryson did as well – until earlier this year. In March, the singer announced that he’s gearing up to hit the road for a new tour after a six-year long hiatus.

The Louisville, Kentucky singer took to Instagram to announce his Back And I’m Better tour — reportedly a play on his lyrics from his 2015 hit-single, “Don’t.”

In a photo shared alongside the tour announcement, Bryson Tiller can be seen sporting a hoodie and looking away while encapsulated by a Back To The Future-esque background complete with the film’s infamous DMC Delorean.

The upcoming tour will be making stops in major cities such as Las Vegas, Detroit, New York City, Houston, and more. Tiller’s last tour was in 2017 when he released his second album, True To Self
