The Minister of food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has disclosed government intention to give financial support to poultry farmers in the areas whose farms were recently affected by the H5N1 avian influenza.
He stated this, in a response to the request made by the Paramount chief who doubles as the President of National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi ll, through the President to support poultry farmers affected by bird flu in some areas.
He explained that his Ministry had sent a proposal to cabinet to be considered to set up funds to compansate farmers affected by bird flu.
Dr Afriyie also assured the Ghanaians not to panic because his outfit has directed the Veterinary Department to take the necessary steps to contain the outbreak of the disease to the adjoining District’s.
He advised the residents to report any unusual death of domestic poultry and wild birds to the nearest veterinary office.
