Local News: Chirano Sefwiman Foundation provides 13 communities with mechanized borehole

Thirteen (13) communities under the Chirano Gold Mines catchment area will now have access to potable water.

This follows the provision of mechanized borehole facilities and other social amenities to each of the community by Chirana Sefwiman Foundation.

The 615,000 Ghana cedis worth projects is expected not to only solve the challenge in the beneficiary communities but help the country achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6 target which aims at ensuring access to clean water for all by 2030.

“We have been struggling to get good drinking water over the past years. We used to rely on the Aboabo River for drinking and other purposes but the water has been polluted in recent times. So this water facility given us by the foundation is timely and life-saving. We thank them”, Justice Opoku Agyemang, a resident of Subri said.

“We have been drinking from a stream for decades but the challenge in recent times is people defecate around the water body exposing us to all sort of diseases. This borehole water is a relief for us”, Mavis Opoku, a resident of Ntrentreso noted.

“Our water facility has broken down beyond repairs so we drink from a stream together with animals. Most of us are often diagnosed with water-borne diseases. This intervention has come at the right time”, Helena Asibi, a resident Surano narrated.

Lawerkrom was also provided with a funeral and durbar grounds for community activities.

Commissiong the projects at Ntrentreso, the General Manager of Chirano Gold Mines Ltd, George Nutor commended the foundation for giving back to society.

“These projects were at the request of the beneficiary communities and I am most excited that the Chirano Sefwiman Foundation is living up to its objective and providing for community needs.

“The Foundation which started with seed money of 2 million dollars realized from gold mined by Chirano has so far provided full scholarship to 60 students at the tertiary level”.

For every ounce of gold, a dollar is set aside in the foundation to improve the socio-economic well-being of residents around their catchment area.
