Nine children drown at Weija while returning from school in a boat

Nine children from the island settlement of Faanaa, in Accra, drowned on their way home from school.

According to the report we sighted on Tru News Report, the schoolchildren were travelling from Faana to Kelee in the Greater Accra Region’s Ga South Municipality.

According to additional news from 3News correspondent Joseph Armstrong who originally broke the news, the children ranged in age from 8 to 15. Eight of the children whose bodies were earlier discovered were transferred to the morgue at Korle Teaching Hospital. After a hurried search by concerned youth on Thursday morning, the body of the ninth child was found.

Three students escaped the accident, according to Joseph Armstrong and Christian Afiadenyo, the Municipal Director of the National Accident Management Organization (NADMO).

He said that one of the students was in charge of the boat when the incident took place, however, he is unsure of this information.

The youngster might have been one of the three survivors, according to Mr Afiadenyo. Since the event, the town is claimed to have been plunged into a state of mourning.
