Ursula Owusu visits ICT training centres for girls in Western North Region

The Minister for Communications and Dignitalzation, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has commenced on a seven-day working tour of the Western North Region to inspect some selected training centres for the girls in ICT.

She explained that the objective behind the visit was to monitor and have a first hand information in the region to ascertain their current stages and find out challenges confronting the government’s rural Telephony Projects aimed at bringing the country’s yawning dignital divide in the region.

Some of the ICT training centres visited include Sefwi Nsawora, Sefwi Akontombra and Suaman training centres.

The Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West Constituency, expressed satisfaction of work done so far by the instructors and indicated that the core mandate of the Communications and Dignitalzation Ministry was to impact on the lives of the girls through the ICT training so as to allay the fears of using computer in them.

“I believe that if we better understood the role of technology and the opportunities therein and find a better way to communicate it to our young girls, while at the same time showcasing female role models in the field, we stand a better chance of churning out more and more technology-focused on young women,”

A 13-year-old Ella demonstrated to the Minister and her team a game she has successfully created after a week of ICT training. The training, Ella says enabled her to break” a myth of being swallowed by a computer mouse if one touches it.

Majority of the girls were seeing and touching a computer for the first time during the minister’s visit.

They were very appreciative to government for the training.

The Minister said with the support, the region was on course to achieving the vision to train girls and elevate expertise in ICT, in no time.

The Minister gave assurance that her outfit would ensure that devices and access to the internet are made available to the girls for continuous practice.

The Western North Regional Education Director, Mr Stephen Kwaku Owusu praised the Minister and indicated that the region has embraced laudable initiative for the girls.

Mr Kwaku Owusu appealed to the Communications and Dignitalzation Minister to set up ICT training centres and furnished with computers in various District’s across the Region.

This he said, would enhance the girls in ICT to have a permanent avenues to ensure continue practice.

The Minister was accompanied by Mr Alex Djornoboah Tetteh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sefwi Akontombra Constituency, Mr Amoah Yawsom, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akontombra among others.
